The Soldier of the Year competition was established to honor the enlisted men of Longstreet's corps who are the backbone of this organization. These men do more than just show up and shoot, they volunteer at museums and schools, they perform duties off the field that keep their units running. Their spirit helps to achieve the goals of Longstreet's Corps.

The award is named for General Charles Hillsman, a founding member of the Corps and it's longtime commander. Hillsman appreciated the work of the private in the ranks and the NCO's who drove the units.

Applications are due January 31 and any enlisted man from a member unit is eligible. The spirit of the award is to recognize an enlisted man (NCO or Private) in Longstreet's Corps who has stood above the rest in his efforts of goodwill. The soldier may have worked to help his fellow soldiers on and off the field, helped a historic site or has generally excelled beyond the call of duty.

SOY rules are as follows:
1. All full member units can nominate an enlisted man for Soldier of the Year.

2. The 1st Sgt/senior NCO will submit a short written nomination. The nomination should outline why his soldier should be selected as Soldier of the Year.

3. All entries must be received by the Sergeant Major no later than January 1.

4. In January the Sergeant Major will select a committee to review the entries. The committee will consist of two sergeants each from the artillery, cavalry, infantry and associated branches (Navy, Marines, Signal, etc.) for a total of eight members and the Sergeant Major.

5. The committee will review each entry and vote. Sergeants cannot vote for a member from their home unit. The Sergeant Major will only vote to break a tie.

6. One soldier will be selected for the Chuck E. Hillsman Soldier of the Year Award. This award will be given out at the first Corps or Corps Sanctioned event of the following year.
